Update from Lead Scientist Prof. Jay Rotella:
The 2024 Antarctica Field Team safely arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand to receive training and get outfitted for extreme cold weather work at the US Antarctic Program (New Zealand) Clothing Distribution Center there in Christchurch. Today they had a weather delay while awaiting their flight South from Christchurch, NZ to McMurdo Station, Antarctica. They hope to fly south tomorrow. If the weather doesn't clear enough for a good landing on the sea ice tomorrow, they will try again the day after. And we will keep you posted as their progress continues.
Above is a photo of the 2024 Field Team at the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, NZ where they got to check out the Antarctic storm simulator. Looks like they enjoyed themselves while waiting to travel south and experience the real thing!

We will be posting brief profiles of each of the 2024 Field Team members over the course of the Weddell seal pupping season.
